IN MEMORY OF JOHN CUFFMAN/DeMERCHANT
UNITED EMPIRE LOYALIST
BORN ABT 1760
DIED 1830 IN THE PARISH OF KENT, CARLETON COUNTY NB.
A soldier in the Loyalist regiment Prince of Wales American
Volunteers,
John Cuffman served 8 years during the American Revolutionary
War.
In January of 1781 he was captured by the Rebel forces at the
Cowpens,
South Carolina and held as a prisoner of war. In 1783 he was
released
and returned to the British lines at New York.
Along with thousands of other Loyal soldiers and refugees he
came to
New Brunswick to live under the government he fought to protect.
Initially
granted land on the Nashwaak River NB, he lived in Sunbury County
and
Baptized several of his children there. He would move up the
Saint John
River to the vicinity of Hartland around 1805. It was at this
time the new
Surname DeMerchant would take root in the Upper Saint John River
Valley.
John and his wife Mary would have seven children that are known,
4 boys and 3 girls, which would spread the name far and wide
from the
forests and fields of Carleton County.
This is to commemorate the hard work, bravery, and fidelity
of our
Ancestor, the founder of the surname DeMerchant and his descendants
who carried the name worldwide.
